IELTS

The IELTS stand for international English language testing system.
It is required for PLAB 1,GMC registration (not a prerequisite for plab 2) and TIER 2 visa application.
It tests your proficiency in the English language in 4 areas : Listening,Reading,writing and speaking
Each area is scored from band 0-9 and the average of the 4 areas gives your overall band .

TYPES
various types of IELTS exist.there is the General and academic. You only require the academic module for plab.
There is the simple ACADEMIC and the UKVI ACADEMIC (monitored with CCTV and a little bit more expensive ),it is better to go for the UKVI academic from the get go since it satisfies PLAB,GMC registration and TIER 2 visa application.

CRITERIA
PLAB 1
At least band 7 in each of the 4 areas and at least band 7.5 overall score
PLAB 2
Not required
GMC REGISTRATION
At least band 7 in each of the 4 areas and at least band 7.5 overall score
TIER 2 general visa
Only IELTS UKVI ACADEMIC of at least band 4 in each of the 4 areas and at least band 4 overall score

To avoid any confusion , this means an IELTS UKVI ACADEMIC score of at least band 7 in each of the 4 areas and an overall band of at least 7.5 will satisfy any requirement so Long as it's valid

VALIDITY
2 years from the date of sitting exams ( not date you received results )

Some people choose to go to academies to aid their preparation. I will advocate for dedicated self practice of 2-3 weeks.
You need to practice a lot and get familiar with the exam format as it can be a very tricky exam especially the WRITING module.Don't underestimate it as it has surprised even some of the most astute and eloquent English speakers.You can find most of the resources at:

VENUE
In Ghana it is organised by the British council, there is at least one exam every month and it's held in ACCRA, KUMASI and TAMALE on various dates throughout the year.Registrations take place online and are processed centrally at the British Council office in Accra .Please see the British council website for more details https://www.takeielts.britishcouncil.org/locations/ghana)
